For the Indian diaspora, worldwide

Indian therapist online, wherever you live

Therapy with someone who grew up with the same culture you did. Sessions in Hindi, Punjabi, Gujarati, Urdu, Rajasthani or English, over secure video, across time zones. I'm Shagoon Maurya, an Indian-origin, Australia-registered counsellor and psychotherapist (ACA Level 2, PACFA).

If you've been searching for an Indian therapist online, or an Indian counsellor or psychologist you can actually talk to from where you live, you already know what you're looking for: someone who doesn't need the backstory explained. Someone who knows what it means when the family group chat goes quiet, what "log kya kahenge" weighs, and why success abroad can feel like a debt you're always repaying.

Therapy that doesn't need subtitles

Plenty of good therapists exist in every country. But describing Indian family life to someone who has never lived it costs energy, and sometimes the meaning still doesn't land. With an Indian therapist, the context is already there, so the hour goes into the work, not the translation.

What NRIs bring to therapy

The loneliness that surprises you even years after moving. Anxiety and burnout from proving yourself twice over. Guilt about ageing parents you can't be with, and pressure to visibly succeed because of what the move cost. Marriage decisions squeezed between two value systems. Raising kids who feel more foreign than familiar. And often, simply having no one around who you can fall apart in front of.

You've been the strong one for a long time. You're allowed a place where you don't have to be.

Searching for an "Indian therapist near me"?

If you've been typing "Indian therapist near me" or "Indian counsellor near me" and coming up short, you're not alone. Outside a handful of big cities, culturally-fluent Indian therapists are genuinely hard to find, and even where they exist, waitlists can be long.

That's exactly what online therapy solves: the nearest Indian therapist becomes as close as your laptop or phone. Same warmth, same cultural understanding, same languages, without being limited to whoever happens to practise in your suburb. And if you're in Melbourne and would prefer to meet face to face, in-person sessions are available here.

How sessions work

Everything is online, over secure video or phone. We start with a free 15-minute consultation, no referral and no obligation, and find a time that works in your time zone, including evenings and weekends where possible. My approach is integrative and evidence-based, drawing on CBT, ACT, DBT-informed skills, mindfulness (MBCT), person-centred and solution-focused work. You can read about my qualifications here.

A note on titles: many people search for an "Indian psychologist online". In Australia, where I'm registered, psychologist is a protected title for AHPRA-registered practitioners, so I practise as a counsellor and psychotherapist, a distinct, fully recognised profession with its own registration standards.

If you're in Victoria and would rather meet face to face, I also offer in-person sessions in Melbourne. And if your background is Pakistani, Bangladeshi, Sri Lankan or Nepali, you may feel most at home on my South Asian therapy page, the same warmth, the wider region.

Your questions

Common questions

Very likely, yes. Online sessions mean you're not limited to therapists in your area, we meet over secure video in your language and your time zone, wherever you are.

Yes. Sessions are held over secure video or phone, across time zones, so you can connect from the US, UK, Canada, Australia, the Gulf, Singapore or anywhere else.

Hindi, Punjabi, Gujarati, Urdu, Rajasthani and English, whichever lets you speak most freely. Mixing languages mid-sentence is completely fine.

I'm an Indian-origin, Australia-registered counsellor and psychotherapist (ACA Level 2, PACFA). In Australia, "psychologist" is a protected title reserved for AHPRA-registered practitioners, so I practise as a counsellor and psychotherapist.

Yes. Living far from family, sending money home, marriage expectations, in-law dynamics and the guilt of building a life abroad are everyday themes in this work. You won't need to explain them from scratch.
