Gottman Method couples therapy

Gottman Method couples therapist, online

The Gottman Method is what happens when four decades of research watches thousands of real couples and writes down what actually works. I'm Shagoon Maurya, a registered counsellor and psychotherapist (ACA Level 2, PACFA) trained in the Gottman Method, and I bring that playbook to your relationship, online.

John and Julie Gottman's research famously predicted divorce with startling accuracy by spotting four corrosive habits, criticism, contempt, defensiveness and stonewalling, the 'Four Horsemen'. The method built on that research is structured, practical and skills-first: less archaeology, more architecture.

As your Gottman-trained therapist I assess where your relationship stands across the 'Sound Relationship House', friendship, fondness, turning towards, managing conflict, shared meaning, then we strengthen the specific levels that are wobbling.

What Gottman work with me looks like

Spot the Four Horsemen

Learn to catch criticism, contempt, defensiveness and stonewalling, and their researched antidotes.

Rebuild the friendship

Love maps, fondness and admiration, turning towards each other's bids, the base of everything.

Manage conflict, don't win it

Soft start-ups, repair attempts, physiological self-soothing, skills for the arguments you'll always have.

Create shared meaning

Rituals, roles and goals that make you feel like a team building something, not co-managers of logistics.

Who the Gottman Method suits

Couples who want something concrete and structured, partners who like understanding the 'why' behind the tools, and relationships where respect is eroding into criticism and distance. It combines beautifully with EFT when deeper attachment wounds are in play.

Gottman's research found masters of relationships aren't conflict-free. They repair faster, and turn towards each other daily.

It's built directly on one of the largest bodies of couples research in existence, decades of longitudinal studies of real relationships.

Gottman is more structured and skills-focused; EFT goes deeper into attachment emotion. I'm trained in both and will recommend honestly after meeting you, often the answer is a blend.
